(Monumental No. 1, Germany)

"The only thing I can say is: Buy this CD!!!!!. "Cantara Anachoreta" is sure one of the best releases in the last time, it is even one of the best releases ever. A CD full of feelings: Love, hate, pain, melancholy, sadness......a big step to the almighty Metal-Olymp! To describe the wonderful details of the CD would take a few hundred pages! The songs are very long and seem like metal-operas....if you listen to them the second time, you'll already know the songs because you won't get them out of your head, and you will be happy when the CD is over so you can start listening to it again. GET IT!!!"

(Revelation of Doom, Austria)

Ungelogen!"

(Execration Zine, Austria)

"Every Fan of dark music will discover incredibly high-levelled compositions. Influences of ANTICHRISIS' music are too numerous to be mentioned but form a style that can be described as the encounter of orchestral melancholic Doom Metal, Gothic Metal and Celtic Folk with a small touch of Black Metal. The amazing potential of the band deserves more means to let them express a borderless imagination."

(Pull the Chain No. 6, Belgium)

(German Underground Crossection No. 8, Germany)

"All you fastfood metalheads better stop reading here, as Germany's ANTICHRISIS have come up with a really deep, totally unique debut.....The disc lasts about 70 minutes (!) and is so full of emotional input that it will enchant you pretty easily....opera-like female vocals and a raw dark male voice, performing medieval, almost classical sounding melodies. Acoustic folklore...gothic inspired passages, midpaced to doomy but always with a strong focus on melodies. Really cool and completely different without sounding pathetic or weird. Check them out, as this band might turn into something really huge sometime soon!"

(Voices of the Darkside No. 10, Germany)

"Do you know what? No....Well, it is as simple as this: I am amazed! Too often within the metal scene you listen to bands including female vocals done in a very amateurish way. Luckily most of these bands only have female vocals on a few parts of their albums. ANTICHRISIS use female vocals throughout their album in combination with male vocals. And I assume that because of this they have been very conscious on how female vocals are to be done. No longer will I keep the secret: These female vocals are marvellous. And together with the male vocals, which are done in a very good way, you don't get the great songs destroyed. The songs are very varied. I dont know how to categorize this album, but it consists of...heavy and atmospheric metal. No matter how you categorize this album, it is at least categorized by myself with a combination that I seldom feel the need to use: quality and original music. Also the lay-out is very well done. In fact, I cannot find any negative spots on this album. Even the playing time is taken care of according to my demands. Challenge your emotions and buy.....A dream? A dream? Its only a dream! Or is it a dream? If so, never wake me up...."

(Imhotep No. 3, Norway)

"The man behind this project, Moonshadow, has come up with an excellent release. Labelling this is impossible and also describing the music comprehensively is still shortcoming. Moonshadow manages to come up with varied songs in which the emotional overtone is intensified by the vocals. The songs are multi-layered, well written and contain a lot of melody and atmosphere. I could continue writing about how great this CD is....the fact that this disc has found its way into my CD-player regularly should say enough...Majestic!"

(Fear of Life Magazine No. 5, The Netherlands)

(Ablaze No. 15, Germany)

A tale of two bands? From Germany, Antichrisis have revealed diametrically opposed musical identities on their first two official recordings. In 1997 they released "Cantara Anachoreta" which was something of a gothic, progressive black metal affair defined by the deep, throaty vocals and obstreperous guitar playing of Sid (also known as Moonshadow). 1998's "A Legacy of Love" favoured a folk-rock approach with pop sensibilities. Uilleann pipes and the female lead vocals....played a major role on that album. Both recordings, however, are similar in lyrical content as themes revolving around ancient cultures, fantasy and mysticism are routinely explored and frequently in a tenebrous manner. --

(Dave Sleger, All Music Guide)

This is a recording that appears to be filled with conflict and contrast. While generally incorporating elements of goth rock and black metal, there are occasional flashes of progressive rock here, especially during the many acoustic passages and the electric-guitar interludes. The lead vocals also comprise a disparate marriage; songwriter and instrumentalist Moonshadow provides the male vocals in a distorted, subterranean, and pained manner while his counterpart Willowcat delivers the female lead in a clear, engaging soprano voice. A battle between good and evil is ongoing throughout "Cantara Anachoreta" (or "The Chants of the Hermit"); in a disquieting "twist of faith" the villain is Jehovah (or the God of the Bible) whose teachings, promises, and total existence are called into question. The prevailing netherworldly force has claimed justice, tolerance, and truth as "Her" own. Eerie is a fitting description for the way that this album unfolds. The best song (yet the most uncharacteristic) of "Cantara Anachoreta" is "Goodbye to Jane" (not the Slade song), a dark and disturbing but tragically realistic account of incest and abuse performed in a mid-'80s Mekons style. --

"Diese CD ist Kunst! Doch was ist Kunst? Laut Brockhaus: "1. Schöpferisch gestaltende Tätigkeit in Baukunst, Plastik, Malerei, Kunsthandwerk (Bildende Künste), in Musik, Dichtung, Theater, Tanz (...). 3.

(Orkus No. 9/97, Germany)

"First CD-Release by german one-man-act ANTICHRISIS. After the success of the demo "Missa Depositum Custodi", "Cantara Anachoreta" is the natural next step to international recognition. Moonshadow might be considered as a very inspired songwriter and as a really talented musician, but I think most important he is an artist, a kind of poet who lives with his own rules (no trends, no search for success....). Songs are fundamently of slow nature with a good lot of inner violence underneath. Material is, throughout the 70 minutes of the CD, incredibly original, innovative and catchy with no dull moment, despite of almost every track lasting ten minutes. Song structures are unpredictable and atmospheres range from very intimate (almost private like on "Requiem ex Sidhe") to gothic and epic ("Baleias"). Lyrics are also different from what you're used to listen to in nowadays releases....sometimes you get the feeling of looking surreptitously through someone else's window....A regenerating musical experience, like nothing else. A masterpiece of originality and musicianship: the favourite of my three-months-old son!"

(Pull the Chain No. 9, Belgium)

(Rock Hard No. 3/97, Germany)

(Metal Hammer No. 4/97, Germany)

(Marterpfahl No. 4, Austria)

(Cothurnus No. 2, Germany)

Herausragend "Requiem ex Sidhe" und "Goodbye to Jane". Eine sphärische Delikatesse! (5 von 5 Punkten)

(Bonner Illustrierte 10/97, Germany)

(Cyrcle of the Tyrants No. 3, Germany)

(Execration No. 2, Austria)

"The only album we have is "Cantara Anachoretta." It is damn great! A mixture of songs of different types (doom, gothic, etc.), different vocals (male and female, clean, doomy, raspy), very catchy melodies, it grows more and more as you listen to it, - a must have experience. Again, can't be categorised at all."

"Breath-taking darkness... It is definetly the best gothic metal album I have heard so far. This album is very emotional. Every song is a masterpiece, beginning with the intro which is truly GOTHIC. The second song (The Endless Dance) is really epic; I also like the third song (Requiem Ex Sidhé) very much - painful and emotional, whereas the fourth (Goodbye to Jane) is different from the others - it's not gothic...but it doesn't make the song worse - it's a story of a sexually abused girl who ends her life with suicide: Good song, some reviewers even called it the best from the album. The fifth and sixth songs are also very good, but the seventh (Descending Messiah) is my favourite. This is one of the few albums where I really like all songs (the others were Lake Of Tears - Headstones, Theatre of Tragedy - Aegis, My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans). I have about 3500 albums in my collection and this is my favourite one! If you like gothic metal I definitelly reccomend you to get this record, you won't regret it!"

"I came by this CD last month. The first fascinating thing was the booklet itself, the next fascinating thing was the music. I'm not much into gothic/black but this CD is roaring...I'm gonna definitely leave Metallica-Megadeth-Korn-and-other-dull-bands-for-money and I'll turn to the european scene where all is about creativity, energy and the music...Definitely must have if you are into this."
